From the summer of 1884, Anton Bruckner struggled to give birth to his last completed symphony – the grand and complex masterpiece that was his Eighth. The resulting piece is one of magical solemnity, an incomparable portrait in sound glistening with the strings of Bruckner’s newly discovered harp.
Here Stephen Johnson puts an undoubted but troubled masterpiece in context while Simone Young and his CBSO bring the music to life.
