Peter Renshaw

Peter Renshaw is a creative learning consultant with a special interest in institutional change and lifelong learning. He was formerly Lecturer in Philosophy of Education at the University of Leeds Institute of Education (1970-75) and Principal of the Yehudi Menuhin School (1975-84). In 2001 he retired from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama as Head of Research and
Development, where he pioneered the innovative programme in performance and communication skills (1984-2001). From 1986-1993 he was Gresham Professor of Music.

His clients have included the Irish Government (developing a new Academy for the Performing Arts), Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, Prins Claus Conservatoire Groningen, Royal Conservatoire The Hague, Queensland Conservatorium, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Banff Centrefor the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, the British Council in Tanzania, the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation, Jeunesses Musicales International, and numerous educational and cultural institutions in Europe.

From 2001-2002 he was Chair of the Steering Group for Youth Music's Creating a Land with Music, and from 2001-2003 he was Moderator of the EU Socrates project, Sound Links, on culturaldiversity in music education. In 2005 The Paul Hamlyn Foundation published his research report on Guildhall
Connect, titled Simply Connect: 'Next Practice' in Group Music Making and Musical Leadership. Currently, he is adviser to a Research Project in Lifelong Learning in Music at Prins Claus Conservatoire Groningen and The Royal Conservatoire The Hague. His report, Lifelong Learning for Musicians: the Place of Mentoring, was published in 2006. Most recently he has become Mentor to the Practitioner Development Programme at The Sage Gateshead and Evaluator of the REFLECT programme. He is a Board member of the London International Festival of Theatre, Centre for Creative Communities, Nuance Music Limited (Chair), Accord International and Animarts
