A unique folk ensemble, which brings together extremely talented musicians from across the North East and Cumbria.
With two successful CDs and a growing national reputation, Folkestra has performed at numerous concerts and festivals across the country from Towersey to Edinburgh. In July 2008 Folkestra performed at the BBC Proms first ever 'Folk Day' and more recently at The Sage Gateshead's 5th Birthday celebrations in December 2009 when Folkestra members (old and new) performed alongside Sting, Andy Sheppard and Thea Gilmore in Kathryn Tickell's Surprise Concert.
Founded and directed by renowned Northumbrian musician and Folkworks Artistic Director Kathryn Tickell, the group enjoys the best folk tuition in the country, with other tutors including Ian Stephenson. Folkestra's repertoire includes traditional music and members' own compositions. The musicians are aged 13 ' 19 and rehearse fortnightly. No previous experience of folk music is required and players of any instrument, including singers, are welcome to apply.
The fee for the full 10/11 season is £370, this includes a residential course and bursaries are available through the David Goldman Award Scheme. Tours are charged as extra.
