Open Studio

Open Studio is an open access programme which offers a great opportunity for young people aged 8-18 who want to make music and develop their skills as players or singers.

Under the guidance of our expert tutors, students will play as part of an ensemble and learn musicianship skills including music theory, composition, improvisation and arranging. There will be performance opportunities as well as the chance to take part in practical workshops, trying out different instruments and styles/genres of music.

Open Studio is not audition-based and invites all young musicians of any standard in any instrument to come and learn new musical skills in a friendly and welcoming environment.

The Open Studio Programme is currently split into two groups:

Root Position

This group is for young people aged 8yrs - 11yrs and runs from 11am ' 1pm, fortnightly on a Saturday.  Fees are £60 per term, for 6 sessions in total. This group focuses on foundation level music theory and language.  The group then uses Ukulele and voice as a means to compose and to develop an ensemble.

1st Inversion

This group is for those aged 12yrs - 18yrs and runs from 10am ' 1pm, fortnightly on a Saturday. Fees are £100 per term (6 sessions).

In addition, Open Studio sessions are held at Haydon Bridge Community High School in Northumberland, on alternate weeks to those sessions running at The Sage Gateshead.

Please note: In cases of need, there may be some financial assistance towards the payment of fees. You can enrol onto the Open Studio programme throughout the year, however we would advise participants to sign up for a full term.
