If you are passionate about music and ready to commit to your musical development, The Sage Gateshead's Weekend School has something for you. It offers a programme of top quality tuition suited to every devoted musician, aged 7-19, and welcomes learners from all genres, across a wide range of instruments and voice.
Our tutors are outstanding professional musicians and music educators from the region and beyond, covering a wide range of genres and expertise, but we also recognise that in some cases you should continue with your current teacher, if this is the best choice for you.
We encourage our students to continue with their musical life outside of the Weekend School, at school or within the local community, and believe your involvement with The Sage Gateshead will greatly benefit these activities.
Being a member of the Weekend School opens up many amazing opportunities to work and perform with extraordinary professional musicians. Weekend School Students have already had the privilege of working with artists like Imogen Cooper, Tim Garland, Willard White, Jian Wang and Norma Winstone.
The Weekend School offers two programmes:
Programme 1 (7-19s)
This programme is suited to young musicians with great potential and the dedication to achieve a solid music foundation.
The Basic Package includes a one-to-one lesson on the first instrument/voice, ensemble and a musicianship class (theory and aural training). The ensemble might be one of our regional youth ensembles, subject to successful audition. Other subjects like improvisation, choir or second instrument/voice can also be added depending on the individual needs of each student.
Programme 2 (11-19s)
This programme is designed for talented students who are committed to their musical training and who may wish to follow a musical profession in the future. In this programme you are strongly encouraged to audition for our regional youth ensembles and, if successful, your participation becomes part of your Weekend School curriculum.
Weekly classes include: one-to-one lesson on first instrument/voice/composition, second instrument, small ensemble, music language/harmony, aural training, improvisation, choir and optional subjects like university/college preparation.
