Kathryn Tickell's CREATE Project
CREATE is one of the key projects developed by Folkworks Artistic Director, Kathryn Tickell with the aim of providing opportunities for established traditional musicians to develop their skills as composers and arrangers, and in working with musicians from different genres.
The success of the Scottish ‘Distil’ programme, which offer similar opportunities, is evidenced by the number of Scottish traditional musicians who, in the last ten years, have been successful in gaining commissions offered both within Scotland and elsewhere.
The first CREATE project took place in 2011 and gave nine English musician/composers the opportunity to develop skills in working with classical musicians, through the challenge of developing new compositions for a string quartet.
The project will take the form of two teaching/composing periods and a final performance during the Folkworks Fiddles on Fire Festival in May 2013. The compositions will be for a string quartet and will be presented in a concert of the new works on Saturday 4th May.
The teaching /composer contact times will be 8th January and 11th and 12th April. The mentors will be Alan Fearon from Northern Sinfonia and composer Agustin Fernandez, originally from Bolivia now based in Newcastle who will work on on orchestration and arrangement skills. The string quartet (drawn from Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra of Sage Gateshead) will be available for the musician/composers to work with and to perform their work. There will also be provision for 1:1 surgeries at other times.
There is limited space still available for traditional musicians to take part in this project. There is no cost to musicians to take part in this – although if travelling to the region they need to cover own costs and need to be available on the above dates.
