Northern Sinfonia

Chorus

The appointment of Simon Halsey as Principal Conductor, Choral Programme heralds one of the most exciting periods in Northern Sinfonia Chorus's history. The Sage Gateshead is home to the Sinfonia and the Chorus alike.

Northern Sinfonia Chorus

As well as conducting several performances per season Halsey, together with chorus master Alan Fearon prepares performances in The Sage Gateshead and throughout the North of England with conductors including Thomas Zehetmair, Thierry Fischer and Nicholas McGegan.

Formed in 1973 to complement the work of Northern Sinfonia, the Chorus has performed in concerts, broadcasts and recordings both with and without the orchestra.

It has been involved in all the orchestra's activities from village hall concerts to international touring. The Chorus' wide repertoire spans the centuries from the 17th to the 20th, from Bach motets to oratorio, British part songs, and world premieres.  Performances of Haydn, Stravinsky, Faure and Tippett, and staged performances of Mozart opera are all part of the Chorus' repertoire.

Amongst the many recordings the Chorus has made are Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Mozart's Requiem, Vaughan Williams' operas Sir John in Love and Riders to the Sea, Bliss' Pastorale, and Songs of Northumbria.
